It wasn't long ago when your family doctor came to your house with a single medical bag and delivered your babies, treated your family when they were ill, and comforted your loved ones in their last hours of need. At the first sign of trouble you thought to call your doctor before things got worst. Over the years, progress, urbanization and electronic communication has separated us from each other to the point many people don't maintain reliable relationships with those people most important for their welfare and protection. Daytime TV commercials are filled with personal injury, bankruptcies, worker's compensation, and a host of other legal specialists who are interested in you after you have a legal emergency. However, if the only time you call a lawyer is after the damage has been done, you are not fully protecting yourself and your family.
None of you would ever consider taking out a kitchen knife and performing open heart surgery on yourself at home. Yet, people think nothing of butchering themselves by trying to handle their own legal problems. After 22 years of practicing in numerous specialty areas, I thought it was time to make a concerted effort to convince families of two things. First, plan as far ahead as possible. Second, realize when it is time to bring in a professional. I can't tell you the tens of thousands of dollars people could have saved themselves if they would have just called me before they took matters into their own hands.
This blog will be based on what families tell me they need. Initially, I am going to share the 10 most common telephone calls and my general response to each. I will also be commenting on new laws that may affect you, war stories of families I have helped in the past (stripped down, of course, to protect anonymity!), and even a lawyer joke or two along the way.
My hope for this blog is for you to begin to appreciate the importance of giving as much, if not more, attention to your family's legal needs as you do to their medical needs. So... take your time and enjoy the information I have provided. And remember that a lawyer, while the brunt of many jokes, is just as important to your family's health and protection as your family physician.
